This Concert opened up great and ended even better. July Talk's opener was a band of 2 fella's called Crown Lands, who were basically the offspring of Rush and Zeppelin with a touch of Blind melon's Shannon Hoon in the lead singer (who was also the drummer). Their guitarist was bangin' on the keys in breaks from playing his double neck guitar that was either a bass and a 6 string or he'd switch it up with a double neck with a 6 string and 12 (both acoustic and electric). Every now and then this guy would be playing a song in electric and then just walk over to play this double neck acoustic guitar that was propped up on a stand while still having an electric guitar strapped on to him. But yeah anyways it was fucking crazy. On to July Talk, who start off classy as ever with their land acknowledgement on treaty 7 territory and confessing their excitement to be back in Alberta. Which is quite sad considering the disrespect that I heard was given from a crowd member in Edmonton (the place Peter calls home.) I was super entranced by all the videos playing in the background on the stage especially during the performances of their new songs that offer a super synth driven kinda "new wave" sound in great tunes like "Certain Father" or a ghostly kind of tone thats Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds esque in tunes like "After This". Then not long after, Peter is crowdsurfing during "Beck + Call" and the crowd is just going wild, then somewhere after that they played "Picturing Love" which gave me an unbelievable new unfound love for that tune. Of Course playing crowd favourites like "Push + Pull" and " Summer Dress" that had myself and everyone else screaming their hearts out. For the typical concert adult version of peekaboo in what is the encore, they edged us on to wait to hear "Lola + Joseph" and "The Garden". You cant but help but love this great Canadian band and especially their insane and involved stage presence paired with the clash of vocals between Leah's gracefulness and Peter's deep darkness. I just wished they would've played "Paper Girl" just for me hehehehehe.
