When a Newfoundlander writes a song, it becomes a Newfoundland song

Just a few days before hearing of Mark's passing, I made my post for brain tumour awareness month featuring the Shanneyganock - "Live on George Street" version of "Grey Foggy Day". It's immediately the first song that comes to mind when I think of the colour grey. "It's been some years ago, since I Ieft from my island, to go to the mainland, like the old folks would say." The original Eddie Coffey version is sure to hold a place of its own; but hearing the stylings of Mark Hiscock over it is unbeatable. Much like the Mark driven version of "Music and Friends" featuring the original sound of Simani. Those kinds of tunes and many others are sure to tug at the heart strings of a mainland stricken Newfie boy. They'll tug even harder now.

I've spent much time transposing by ear to a harmonica using Mark's accordion work as inspiration. Where you might find a little bit of Harry Hibbs, you'll find a lot of Mark.

I know I've expressed how music can bring so many people together, and the right Newfoundland song can bring an entire nation together. Which is the idea that "Music and Friends" aptly portrays with its lyrics.

"They always go together hand in hand

Where there's one there'll be the other, music and friends"

I've surprisingly and unfortunately never seen Shanneyganock play live.

Would I really want to see them now? :(

Rest easy Mark
